Barösund 1870 -> 2023 16.4-3.9.2023
The exhibition Barösund 1870 -> 2023 is the beginning of a series where Chappe invites contemporary artists to look at the Albert de la Chapelle Art Collection from different points of view – studying the old to create something new.
For the exhibition, artists Ahmed Alalousi, Sandra Kantanen, Katarina Reuter and Panu Ruotsalo have each in their own way created artworks that comment Hjalmar Munsterhjelm’s painting “Eventide in Barösund”. All the participating artists live and work in Raseborg and Hanko in the Western Uusimaa region of Finland.
Work on the new artworks began with a joint meeting in May 2021, when the artists met for the first time and were given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the painting “Eventide in Barösund” where it was stored at the museum Collection Centre LEIRA. Since that meeting, each artist has created one or more works of art. Their starting point has been Munsterhjelm’s painting.
On the documentary videos, #studiovisitchappe, we meet the artists in their creative process. The artists talk about their artistic work, the assignment and their interpretation of Munsterhjelm’s painting. Through watching the videos, we can accompany the exhibition curator on her visits to their studios and in nature. The videos, produced by dlc media, can be viewed in the Chappe Art Museum and on Chappe’s YouTube channel.
In 2005, Albert de la Chapelle set up a foundation to acquire old and new Finnish art with a connection to the Western Uusimaa region. “Eventide in Barösund” was one of the earliest acquisitions to the Albert de la Chapelle Art Collection, which has been donated to the Museum of Western Uusimaa.
Barösund is about a six-kilometre-long strait in the northern part of the Ingå archipelago, which is closely connected to the seafaring history of the Gulf of Finland. Today, the archipelago of Barösund forms a vast landscape area that includes cultural-historically valuable sites.
