Climate & Art – Alternative Approaches
16.4-3.9.2023

The opening exhibition of Chappe – Art house by the sea, Climate & Art – Alternative Approaches, honours the memory of Albert de la Chapelle (1933–2020), Professor of Human Genetics, by highlighting – in accordance with the donor’s wish – environmental values and sustainable development.

The exhibition uses art and design to introduce a cultural perspective to ecological reconstruction. Its leading theme is fostering a more symbiotic relationship that is generated through the connection between people and extends to other species and the planet. The participants of the exhibition are artists and designers along with a biodesigner and a wild food chef, who, together, endeavour to offer alternative and constructive perspectives on the dystopic way of thinking that often prevails in climate change art.

Ecological sustainability takes concrete shape in art that is originated from and connected to nature through bio-based materials and ecological techniques. Circular economy and the utilisation of organic waste play an important role in the works of the artists participating in the exhibition. In addition to environmental consciousness, sustainable thinking involves political and economic perspectives on, for instance, the possible ways to distribute resources and knowledge in a fair and just way. Among the participants are artists who co-operate with researchers by, for example, participating in field trips in nature.

Guide books written by the artists are published as co-products of the exhibition. Their themes include practices for sustainable photography in the Finnish archipelago, the creation of a bee house for hermit bees and other pollinators as well as the building of a cargo mobile office that combines a cargo bike and an office with built-in solar panels to produce electricity.
